Other Characters: Ginia (OC)
Character InformationName: Irisviel von Einzbern
Canon: Fate/Zero
Canon Point: Her death in episode 22
Age: Looks and acts in her early twenties, is 9 due to being a homunculus.
History: Wiki link, using only the source material for Fate/Zero.
Personality: As a homunculus, Irisviel was supposed to serve a single purpose of becoming the vessel for the Holy Grail. At most, she could act independently enough to defend herself (and thus the grail), but she wasn’t meant to have any desires or a sense of self. Due to Kiritsugu’s influence and care, over a period of nine years, Irisviel developed a personality of her own.
She understands her role as vessel and accepts she’ll die ultimately, but bears no resentment, seeing it as a part of her duty to the Einzberns and a way to carry her husband’s ideas and wishes to fruition. Irisviel carries herself with a gracious and compassionate manner, acting very much like a proper lady. She’s polite, soft-spoken, and very kind, choosing to befriend Saber out of kindness and treating her as a dear friend rather than a means to Kiritsugu’s end. She’s also analytical, actively involved in Kiritsugu’s planning sessions and making observations about the situation. When Kiritsugu asks her if they can leave everything behind and escape together, she embraces him and quietly points out he’s lying and accurately points out the nature of his character that would forbid him from abandoning the Holy Grail War. When she heads into battle with Maiya, she tells her companion to “do whatever you need to do to win.” Irisviel dislikes cruelty—Kiritsugu’s execution of Lancer and his masters leaves her visibly shocked and angry—but is aware of the costs of battle and sometimes what it takes.
However, despite her appearance and mannerisms, Irisviel has only existed for nine years, and those nine years were spent restricted to a castle. While Kiritsugu taught her about the world through pictures, movies, and books, nine years is still not a lot of time to fully develop. Thus Irisviel also has a childish side to her as well. She giggles when Saber makes an innocent comment with an unintended double entendre, is giddy about the prospect of being able to explore the town, and splashes about in the ocean and picks up seashells with complete delight. With everything in the world so new, she faces it with wide-eyed optimism, wanting to see the world Kiritsugu wishes to protect.
The two aspects balance themselves well along with her deep devotion. Even as she enjoys splashing around in the water, the moment Saber mentions a threat is nearby, she’s instantly serious and ready to take action. She is not a fighter and aware of her limited abilities, but does not shy from being at Saber’s side when they engage other Servants, declaring openly she’ll support Saber with healing magic. When Kiritsugu is under attack, instead of escaping, she chooses to stay and fight out of love (commenting “isn’t the human heart a funny thing?” with a giggle).
Love is what guides Irisviel. The love for a daughter she’ll never see again, but wants to create a better world for. The love for a husband who wishes to make the world better. Irisviel is lead by love and devotion, but also understands the limitations of her views. By her own admission she doesn’t fully understand Kiritsugu’s ideals, but is still willing to die for his cause because she loves him and believes her death will bring forth a better world. Her final words are defending her husband’s wish for a world of peace.
What does this mean for her in the Far Shore? As a shinki, free of her memories and thus her devotion to her husband and her inevitable end as the Holy Grail, this allows her to live a free, happy life. With how accepting she is of her inevitable death as the Holy Grail, she would be able to be a shinki without any regrets for her role. She would accept serving a god and devote herself fully to their cause, though she wouldn’t be fully passive either. Within Fate/Zero, after the death of Lancer and his Master very cruel death, Irisviel is short and angry with Kiritsugu, maintaining poise and dignity while expressing her disappointment (and hiding how weak she is in the moment).
A god pushing her against her morales would earn her disdain and disagreement and she would not be afraid to stand up for herself. However, a god who is caring or a god in need of care would find themself in the care of a compassionate and devoted mother-figure. Her caring nature would also extend to others around her. She is the kind of person that cares and comforts but without seeking to change them. Kiritsugu is a cold, stoic individual and while he becomes a better person in her presence, she never set out to change him and loves him for who he is (and also understanding the sacrifices he makes). She’s a very considerate and understanding person in that regard.
Irisviel would do well as a shinki in the Far Shore, able to settle into the slice of life aspects and up friends and family around her, but equally able to take action if the moment called for it. She would delight in answering prayers and find pride in smiting ayakashi with her god alike. The lack of memories would not bother her, nor would her role. She’d take pride in things as they are and do her best to protect and serve.
Abilities: Irisviel is a glass cannon: Full of incredible magic ability, too frail to take more than one hit. She’s capable of using transmutation, channeling magical energy through metal wires in order to shape and control them. In Fate/Zero, she’s able to control the wires to create a large wireframe eagle that can act independently and fly and attack on her behalf, effortlessly manipulating the wires to then immobilize and snare all within seconds. In Fate/Grand Order, one of her attack animations uses the ability to create multiple swords that fly through the air on a direct path. In greater theory, the ability allows her to channel the wires into whatever shape she desires provided she has the magical energy required.
However, because of her physical frailty, Irisviel is not someone meant to be in the frontlines of a fight and will go down very quickly if injured. Her abilities are best used in an ambush or with hit-and-run tactics. By and large, her use of transmutation is a means to defend herself so she can escape, but try telling her that.
Irisviel also possesses healing magecraft and is seen healing the wounds of multiple characters, even at a distance. This is not an instantaneous heal, but something akin to a channeled spell that reknits flesh and removes toxins over time. It also draws on her magical energy.
Though the specifics are shown off-screen, Irisviel is capable of setting up defensive barriers around an area that alert her (it’s a physical reaction, akin to getting splashed with cold water) when someone crosses the barrier. She is able to determine who the intruder is as well as their location and if they’re moving or not. She is also seen using a crystal ball to observe the barriered area. In the greater world of the universe, setting up a barrier is a thing many mages can do without difficulty so this is not unusual. Scrying as well. Because there’s little shown with Irisviel and scrying, I’m keeping it to observation within an area inside a barrier she’s created, through the use of a clear crystal ball only (as is seen in the show). As for creating a barrier, this would draw on her energy to create and sustain.
As a note, because of Irisviel’s origin as a homunculus and intended purpose as a vessel of the Holy Grail, the amount of magical energy she has is quite high. She is shown healing Maiya’s serious (but non life-threatening) injuries seconds after recovering from multiple stab wounds and blood loss and after a battle without showing any tiredness or ill-effects in the subsequent scenes. This isn’t to say Irisviel doesn’t get tired or worn out from using magic, but her energy use is either immensely efficient, she has an incredible pool of energy to draw from, or some combination of the two. I plan on balancing and gauging her magic use within the Far Shore.
Because she’s a homunculus, she doesn’t have to eat and can sustain herself on magical energy alone. For the sake of simplicity, she’ll sustain energy by eating food and also use the mechanics outlined for Fate/ Servants to regain magical energy.
In mundane things, Irisviel is shown to be a very good defensive driver due to learning combat driving skills, but also disregards traffic laws and treats her car like a toy. Gods have mercy on anyone who gets in a car with her and lets her drive. She also understands technology in that she’s seen using a cellphone and communicating with a radio transmitter, but Fate/Zero is also set in 1994, so she’ll need some practice with modern technology. For languages, the ones she would be most reasonably fluent in are German (the Einzberns are a family rooted in Germany), English, and Japanese.
Strengths: Compassionate, confident, devoted, principled, loving.
Weaknesses: Physically frail, sheltered, childish, self-sacrificing, unambitious.
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: The reason I want her to be a shinki is because of the memory loss aspect. Irisviel is a character with motivations largely to her husband, Kiritsugu. I think it would be interesting playing her with everything she’s learned from him, but also removed from dedicating herself solely to his cause and goals and instead finding goals and aspirations of her own. There’s a high chance she’ll simply take up her god’s cause, but in a lighter environment, it’ll give her a chance to decide between following a cause because she has to and following a cause because she wants to.
Cause Of Death: Body already deteriorating, Irisviel is captured by Berserker and taken to Kirei Kotomine. As she lays in a magic circle, Kotomine asks if Irisviel is unhappy he’ll be the winner of the Holy Grail War. Irisviel replies she would only entrust the grail to Kiritsugu and tells Kotomine he will never understand who Kiritsugu, that the two men are nothing alike. Angered by her response, he begins to choke her before releasing her, asking her with Kiritsugu’s wish for the Holy Grail is. She answers it’s a wish for a world of peace, without war and suffering and bloodshed, a world of true peace, a wish Kotomine will never be able to understand. Kotomine strangles her again and breaks her neck.
Full scene on YouTubeVessel: The Dress of HeavenName Location: On the back of her right hand.
Power: Healing Aura: Her vessel power creates a healing aura around her god in a three foot radius that allows her to heal injuries. Minor injuries like bruises and minor cuts will heal instantly, while more serious injuries (broken bones, deep cuts, organ damage) will require more time. The effectiveness will increase with time/experience. The aura will affect anyone else standing in the field, but have the strongest effect on her god. This does not affect blight or injuries supernatural in origin (such as a curse or an ability that prevents healing).
Writing SampleSample: TDM Sample 1TDM Sample 2OtherAnything Else?: I would like her to be assigned to Cu Chulainn Alter as his shinki. This has been discussed with the player.
At the time of Irisviel’s death, her body is so frail to the point where laying in a magic circle is the only thing keeping her alive and even talking is difficult. As a shinki, I’m rolling her body to a point where she still has some of the frailty, but without the rapid deterioration her body experiences as a vessel of the Holy Grail.
